The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will be making ADA improvements along Route 31, which will include several areas in Geneva this fall.
Starting Thursday, Oct. 12, the construction plans call for sidewalk improvements at the following Route 31 intersections:
- North Street;
- Stevens Street;
- Ford Street;
- Peyton Street (including removal of sidewalk crossing);
- Hamilton Street (including removal of sidewalk crossing);
- State Street (Route 38);
- James Street;
- Campbell Street (including removal of southern sidewalk crossing);
- Franklin Street (including removal of sidewalk crossing); and
- Third Street.
The project also involves installing new pedestrian signals at the State and Third streets intersections.
IDOT stated work will begin north of State Street and progress south through Geneva. Crews will circle back to the Street and Route 31 as the final intersection improvement.
Most of the improvements will not require long-term lane closures with crews focusing on one side of the street at a time where possible. Flaggers and signage will help motorists navigate through the work zones.
The project is being managed by IDOT, which also decided to remove the selected sidewalk crossings. The City of Geneva does not have jurisdiction on the matter since Route 31 is a state highway.
