Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022 and the overall project is expected to be completed in 2024.
Nov. 2 Update
Union Pacific is anticipating making additional repairs to the Route 31 train bridge on Saturday, Nov. 11. Pending receiving Illinois Department of Transportation approval, the repairs would require closing one one lane with flaggers directing traffic near the underpass. The City will make another announcement once Union Pacific receives the state permit.
During the remainder of fall, construction activity will be busy around the Geneva train station. Crews will be installing new train commuter shelters, adding new electrical infrastructure for parking lot lights, and starting work on a new train platform.
The parking lot, located on the west side of Third Street south of the tracks, was closed last month for reconstruction. The lot is being moved further south to accommodate the future third rail line. Union Pacific hopes to have the parking lot completed by the end of 2023, weather permitting.
