A powerful storm sweeping through Geneva Feb. 27 triggered several power outages on the City’s west side.

The first outage began at 7:12 p.m. when high winds caused debris to land on a ComEd power line at Keslinger and Randall roads. While the City owns and operates its own electric utility, ComEd power lines run through Geneva to our municipal substations. The incident caused 2,949 customers to lose service in an area bounded by State Street, Randall Road, Fabyan Parkway and Route 31. About half the customers experienced a momentary disruption before service was restored via automatic switching. The Geneva Public Works Department switched out the remaining 1,477 customers to other City substations to bring them back online by 7:38 p.m.

The second incident occurred at 7:20 p.m. when the storm caused a private property tree to fall, pulling down electric wires and breaking a utility pole. Twenty-seven customers along South Street, Kaneville Road and Fritz Lane lost power. Public Works spliced the wires and held the pole up with a truck to restore service by 12:45 a.m. Feb. 28.

The final power failure started at 7:47 p.m. after winds blew down another tree on top of power lines. The outage impacted nine customers on Burgess Road, Kaneville Road and Southampton Court. Tree trimmers had to remove the tree before power could be restored at 8:26 p.m. Feb. 27.

As a reminder, customers can report power outages after hours by calling the Geneva Police Department’s non-emergency number at 630-232-4736. The City's online request system and social media accounts are not monitored 24 hours a day.
