Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022, and the overall project is expected to be completed in 2024 or possibly 2025.
July 26 Update
Union Pacific anticipates the Route 31 underpass will reopen to vehicles Friday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. If the underpass opens on schedule, operations will shift to Third Street with that grade crossing being shut down Monday, Aug. 19. The Third Street closure is expected to last six weeks.
The Route 31 underpass was originally expected to be completed earlier this summer, but project delays have stemmed from utility relocations in the area.
To accommodate ongoing rail construction, Metra canceled the last two inbound and last two outbound trains Friday, July 26.
Two inbound trains that normally depart from Elburn at 9:25 and 10:25 p.m., and the the final two outbound trains scheduled to leave Ogilvie in Chicago at 11:40 p.m. and 12:40 a.m. will not operate.
Rail commuters should visit Metra’s website for the latest details.
