[ARCHIVED] Winter Operations Update - March 2

The Winter Weather Advisory has expired for Kane County this morning after Geneva received about 4 inches of snow.

The City's Public Works team worked throughout the evening clearing emergency snow routes (main arterial roads), which were in pretty good shape as of 6 a.m. this morning. The clean-up process is taking a little longer than normal because the road salt is not working that well with the current weather conditions.

Crews are now working on residential streets and cul-de-sacs and are targeting to have these roads finished by early afternoon. Please keep your parked cars off the streets until crews have completed their work.

Attention also is being dedicated to cleaning downtown sidewalks in preparation for the Geneva Wedding Walk, which starts at 11 a.m. today. The City's contractor is also working on plowing downtown parking lots this morning.

The weather forecast calls for maybe a few snow showers this morning, but otherwise mostly cloudy skies with a high in the teens.

********MARCH 1*******
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1 to 9 a.m. Sunday, March 2. After a brief amount of snow this morning, the forecast is calling for snowfall of 2 to 5 inches.

Please take time to remove parked cars from the streets to help with our snow plow operations. City ordinance requires cars be moved off designated emergency snow routes (main arterial roads) after 2 inches and residential streets after 3 inches. Violators may be ticketed or have their vehicles towed.

More steady snow is expected to develop this afternoon and be quite heavy at times this evening with rates possibly reaching up to an inch per hour. This will cause snow covered roads and make travel hazardous across the region.

Decreasing temperatures and increasing winds may bring wind chill readings of 5 to 15 below zero for Sunday morning and 10 to 20 below zero for Monday, March 3.

A Winter Weather Advisory for Snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibility while driving.
