[ARCHIVED] Geneva Home, Two Cars Damaged In Fire

Fire News - New Water Tower

No one was injured after a single-family house was damaged by a fire March 21 in the 3000 block of Winding Meadow Lane on Geneva’s west side.

The Geneva Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 5:30 p.m. reported by both neighbors and the homeowners, who had escaped the house.

As the first unit arrived on the scene, heavy fire was showing from an attached three-car garage. The initial response was immediately elevated to a Special Alarm and then to a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) first-level box alarm for additional manpower, equipment and resources.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive exterior and interior attack and brought the fire under control in about 40 minutes.

The preliminary cause of the fire was determined to be improper storage of an outdoor grill heat diffusion plate in the garage. Firefighters limited the fire damage to the garage, but two cars were destroyed in the blaze. There was moderate smoke and water damage on the second floor and in the attic above the garage. Damage estimates are still being compiled, but the house has been deemed uninhabitable at this time.

Firefighters from Elburn, St. Charles, Batavia, West Chicago, Fermilab and North Aurora assisted Geneva at the scene.

The South Elgin and Winfield fire departments filled in the Geneva fire stations.

Additional support was provided by the Geneva Police Department, Geneva Emergency Management Agency, City of Geneva Electric Department, and NICOR.
