The City is moving forward with a new initiative designed to help Geneva’s large industrial and commercial users save money on energy, reduce the electric load on the power grid during peak times, and reward them for their sustainability efforts.
On March 7, the Geneva City Council approved a five-year partnership with CPower Energy Management to administer PJM’s (the City’s regional transmission provider) energy efficiency and emergency capacity aggregation programs, including:
Energy Capacity
Business participants can earn money for being available to use less energy when the power grid is stressed. Some facilities in the region have received payments totaling $16,545 during the current program year.
Ancillary Services
To held the grid react to sudden, short-term disturbances, industrial customers get paid to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week year-round to make quick energy reductions, typically within 30 minutes.
Energy Efficiency
Facilities can be paid as much as $40/kW per year for permanent load reduction resulting from qualified energy efficiency projects.
CPower has been providing demand response in the PJM market for more than 20 years and is the largest provider for demand response in the ComEd and PJM markets. The company helped qualify nearly 24,000 energy efficiency projects in PJM for the 2021-22 capacity year.
“The new programs will offer incentives to Geneva’s current and future businesses, to take actions that will lower their energy costs, and provide our community with a greener future,” City Superintendent of Electric Services Aaron Holton said. “We’re proud to partner with CPower, who has demonstrated their expertise in navigating programs in complex energy markets, so Geneva companies can focus on running their businesses.”
Geneva industrial and commercial companies interested in learning more about the programs should contact the City’s Economic Development Director Cathleen Tymoszenko (630-232-7449 or email) or CPower Energy Management – PJM Market Account Executive Kellen Bollentino (219-213-8277 or email).
