A Geneva man was arrested Dec. 22 following an investigation of a domestic dispute that took place involving his girlfriend.

Craig G. Chaney, 45, of the 100 block of Syril Drive, has been charged with:

  • Attempted Murder – First Degree – Intent to cause death or great bodily harm, Class X felony (720 ILCS 5/8-4(a) & 720 ILCS 5/9-1(a)(1));
  • Aggravated Domestic Battery – with Strangulation, Class 2 felony (720 ILCS 5/12-3.3 (a-5));
  • Domestic Battery – Prior Convictions, Class 4 felony (720 ILCS 5/12-3.2(a)(2)); and
  • Domestic Battery – Causing Bodily Harm in combination with Prior Convictions, Class 4 felony (720 ILCS 5/12-3.2(a)(1)).

Geneva Police responded to Chaney’s residence at 6:40 p.m. Dec. 22 regarding a domestic disturbance called in by another household member. Upon arrival, officers learned Chaney and his girlfriend were involved in a verbal altercation that became physical. During the physical altercation, Chaney allegedly pinned his girlfriend down and placed his hands around her neck on two separate occasions. She was able to break free of Chaney only after getting ahold of scissors and stabbing his arm.

Interviews with another household member and the original caller, in conjunction with physical evidence on the scene, confirmed the victim’s account of what occurred.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office was briefed about the case and authorized the charges against Chaney, who is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Dec. 23.

Chaney is presumed innocent on all charges until proven guilty in a court of law.
