[ARCHIVED] Report Of Student Seen With Gun Deemed Unfounded

Geneva Police have determined a report of a teenager allegedly seen with a handgun waiting for a school bus this morning has proven unfounded and no children were ever at risk.

Police received a call from a resident about a boy who allegedly “appeared to put a small handgun” into the pocket of his sweatshirt at about 8:05 a.m. Oct. 22 in the 900 block of Longview Drive. Officers were immediately dispatched to the area, but the boy, described as middle school-aged, was no longer there.

Within a few minutes, police were able to identify the teen, who lives in Geneva but attends school in St. Charles. St. Charles Police were subsequently notified of the incident while Geneva Police responded to both Geneva Middle School North and South campuses as a precautionary measure to continue its investigation.

At 8:39 a.m., it was confirmed through an eyewitness that the boy at the St. Charles school was in fact the young teen that was reported to Geneva Police at the bus stop. St. Charles Police met with the boy and determined he did not have a weapon in his possession.

The Geneva Police Department coordinated a quick and effective response to a potential threat thanks to the cooperation of the St. Charles Police Department, Geneva Community Unit School District 304 and school officials in St. Charles. Geneva Police also would like to thank the concerned resident for quickly reporting what he felt was a possible threat to our community.
