With warmer weather in the forecast, Geneva residents can help the City’s electric operations – and lower their own utility bills – by reducing power consumption for a few hours in the afternoon.
The City offers a voluntary electric load reduction program that notifies customers via Twitter/X and our website when to reduce electricity usage.
The program is strictly voluntary. There are no penalties, no required reporting, and no need to track usage. The benefits of reducing energy include supporting a greener Geneva and helping control future electric costs. The Geneva electric system has plenty of capacity and reserves to serve all customers reliably.

After an alert has been issued, customers can easily reduce electric use by adjusting their thermostats a few degrees, running major appliances later in the evening and turning off lights in empty rooms.
The City typically issues about 20 alerts during an average summer.
