[ARCHIVED] Westbound State Street Traffic Pattern Returns To Two Lanes

East State Street Reconstruction

The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to rebuild East State Street (Route 38) from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. The multi-year project encompasses roadway widening, streetscape enhancements, bike lanes, traffic signal upgrades, new street lighting, and water main/storm drainage infrastructure improvements.

Before work can commence on the East State Street reconstruction project in Geneva, several utility companies are relocating underground infrastructure.

Sept. 26 Update

All lanes of westbound State Street have been reopened as Verizon nears completion of its utility work. The company previously had the curbside lane shut down from Route 25 to East Side Drive. The company's contractor has some remaining work just east of the Fox River bridge, but operations are expected to predominantly occur in the parkway. A temporary lane closure only will be implemented on an as-needed basis.

Once work is finished near the bridge, crews will shift closer to Glengarry Drive, with work taking place in the parkway. Verizon's work is anticipated to be finished in October.

On the eastbound side, AT&T and Nicor Gas' contractors continue more extensive utility relocation projects in the curbside lane from Route 25 to East Side Drive. The eastbound lane closure will remain in place into 2026.

Motorists should expect delays and may want to consider alternate routes. Drivers should use caution when driving through the work zone and allow extra time to reach their destination. Geneva Police are encouraging drivers to use the zipper merge system to help alleviate significant backups that are occurring along the state highway.

What's Ahead

In the coming months, Nicor will need to relocate utilities in the westbound lanes of East State Street from Route 25 to East Side Drive. The City is awaiting a schedule from Nicor.

Metronet and Comcast also plan utility work on the East State Street corridor but must apply for permits from IDOT before proceeding.

The full East State Street reconstruction project is now tentatively expected to start in spring 2026 and be completed in late 2027, with punch list items to be finished the following year. The timeline is dependent on how quickly the utility relocations are resolved.

The public can subscribe to road construction updates via Notify Me on the City’s website. The City will provide updates when information is made available by IDOT or the utility companies.
