Geneva’s garbage customers will notice a 25-cent increase to the refuse fee starting with their May utility bills.
The refuse fee covers the costs of administering the solid waste and recycling program, household hazardous waste, bulk leaf collection and disposal, brush pickup, and street sweeping. This week, the Geneva City Council approved the fee increase from $4.05 to $4.30 effective May 15.
The rate adjustment is needed to pay for the current and future garbage collection services during the remaining two years of the contract with the City’s waste hauler Advanced Disposal. The refuse rate was last changed in 2013.
The cost of garbage stickers and refuse carts will remain the same through July 1, when prices will go up according to the terms of the contract.
