4 E. State Street - Looking SouthWelcome to the 4 E. State Street Historic Landmark Demolition project page, where you will find information related to this project. The petitioner is requesting demolition of the blacksmith shop at 4 E. State St.

Status

Following its Dec. 16, 2025, public hearing, the City's Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) unanimously voted to deny the proposed demolition.

On Dec. 17, the applicant requested an appeal of the decision. An appeal is required to be considered by the City Council within 30 days.

A special City Council meeting was held Jan. 12, 2026, at Geneva City Hall. A reversal or modification of the commission’s determination requires not less than two-thirds of the alderpersons holding office (seven votes). At the City Council meeting, six alderpersons voted in favor of overturning the HPC, and four voted to uphold the HPC's decision. As such, the appeal failed, and the demolition request was denied.

City Council and Historic Preservation Commission meetings air live on Geneva Broadcast Network, which can be viewed on Comcast Ch. 10, AT&T U-Verse Ch. 99, or the City’s YouTube channel. Previous meetings are also available to watch on YouTube. Interested parties may sign up to receive email alerts on the project’s status through the “Notify Me” feature found on the City's website. Provide your email and select “Development Projects” to stay informed.
